Frequently Asked Questions About Garnet
Garnet is a group of silicate minerals that share a common crystal structure. The name comes from the Latin word granatus, meaning "seed-like," because the most common red varieties closely resemble the seeds of a pomegranate.
While the deep, wine-red garnet is the most famous, this gemstone actually occurs in a rainbow of colors. You can find them in vibrant orange (Spessartine), brilliant green (Tsavorite), purplish-pink (Rhodolite), and even rare color-changing varieties. The only color you won’t typically find in nature is a pure blue.
Natural garnets often contain tiny, unique inclusions that lab-created stones lack. Because they are relatively hard (6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale), a real garnet can usually scratch glass. Additionally, many red garnets are slightly magnetic due to their iron content—a unique trait among gemstones!
Unlike many other gemstones (like rubies or sapphires) that are frequently heat-treated, most garnets are 100% natural. Their color and clarity are usually exactly as they were when they came out of the earth.
The safest way to clean your garnet is with warm, soapy water and a soft-bristled brush.
- Avoid: Steam cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners, as the vibrations or sudden heat can sometimes cause internal fractures in certain garnet varieties.
- Storage: Store your garnet pieces in a separate pouch; harder stones like diamonds or sapphires can scratch them if they rub together.
