Carat measures weight, cut determines how well the stone reflects light, color rates how close to colorless it is, and clarity describes the visibility of natural inclusions. Cut has the biggest effect on how a diamond actually looks, so a well-cut diamond often appears more brilliant than a larger stone with a poor cut.

It comes down to tone and lifestyle. Platinum and white gold give diamonds a bright, cool backdrop and suit daily wear, since platinum is especially durable. Yellow gold is the traditional choice and warms up the stone's sparkle, while rose gold offers a softer, contemporary look.
